Puncture repairs

Punctures usually occur when sharp objects enter the outer wall of your tyres such as screws, loose nails or pieces of glass. If the object gets deep into your tyre, it can cause a loss of air pressure due to the hole that is formed. There are 2 types of punctures.

Slow Punctures

A slow puncture is a small hole in the vehicle's tyre that allows air to be released gradually. You can identify a slow puncture by inspecting your tyre. If you happen to notice that your tyre looks misshaped, slightly deflated, or has a damaged sidewall, it is highly likely that you have a slow puncture. These tyre of punctures can take time for the deflation of the tyre to become obvious, which could take as long as a few days or even weeks. Usually, slow punctures can be repaired depending on what has caused the problem. If a sharp object has caused the slow puncture, it is possible to repair the hole. However, if they puncture has been caused due to damage to the sidewall, rim or wheel, a repair may not be possible. Here are a few ways you can spot a slow puncture in your tyre...

Pulling to one side

As you're driving, you may notice that your car is pulling to one side, caused by the change in pressure from the puncture.

Loss of tyre pressure

If you feel as though you have to frequently top up a specific tyre with air, this is a strong indicator you may be dealing with a slow puncture.

Steering wheel vibration

This is usually felt during high speeds. shuddering or hear a noise, indicating reduced pressure in one of your tyres.

Vehicle handling

Anything from your suspension feeling different to changes in steering and cornering could indicate a slow puncture and should be checked by a professional.

Jump starts

Jump starting  is the process of restarting a vehicle which has a fault or malfunctioning starter motor. A temporary connection is made to the battery of another vehicle, or to some kind of external power source, Before beginning the process, you must ensure...

  • The key is out of the ignition
  • There are no naked flames nearby
  • All metal items and clothing are out of the way
  • The battery is not leaking/damaged

Locking wheel nut removal

Locking wheel nuts are used to secure your tyres, as well as preventing theft. It requires a unique locking wheel nut removal key to remove it. They keys are small, metal cylinder shaped tools with a hexagonal shape on the other side. Each vehicle has it's own unique key which is usually stored with the spare tyre, the glovebox compartment, or in the boot storage section. If the key has been damaged or lost, 247tyres2u will be able to remove your locking wheel nut without causing any damage to your vehicle.

Wheel balancing

A vital factor of tyre maintenance is the wheel balancing. It involves adding weights to rims to ensure the weight is distributed evenly across the wheels. This is important for ensuring safety on the road, as well as making sure you have a smooth ride. You must ensure you are aware of any signs which could indicate an unbalanced wheel. Read below for the signs...

It is important that the weight of the vehicle is evenly distributed across the entire width of each tyre. If a wheel is not correctly balanced, then one side of a wheel will carry more of the vehicles weight leading to the wheel rotating unevenly forcing a vibration to be felt throughout the car.

If one side appears slightly higher than the other, then the wheel is not balanced correctly. As the tyres rotate at speed , the uneven motion will cause the vibration to be felt and the tyre tread to wear out quickly.

An uneven rotation of the wheels can be felt through the steering wheel as a vibration. This can be problematic as it can impact your ability to steer in a particular direction if needed.

If a wheel is incorrectly balanced this will add excessive pressure to the wheel bearings causing a loud noise from the tyre when driving at high speeds. The driver may also notice the steering wheel feels loose, meaning less control of the vehicle for the driver.

Tyre Information

How to find your tyre size

Width: This is the overall width of the tyre, represented by the first 3 digits on the sidewall of the tyre.

Profile: The next pair of numbers give the measurement for the height of the tyre as a percentage of the tyre width.

Rim: R stands for 'Radial', which means the tyre has a radial construction. The vast majority of modern tyres are made with a radial construction.

Diameter: The last 2 numbers show the size of the wheel rim on the vehicle.

The easiest way of finding your tyre size is by simply looking on the sidewall of the tyre. Tyre manufacturers always feature the tyre size on the sidewall of the tyre. You may also find your vehicle's tyre size in the handbook. It is important that you know how to read your tyre size as this is one of the first questions you will be asked when reaching out to us.
